LITTLE - Dorothy Little
- Services were held at Thompson Funeral Home for Dorothy Little on March
27. Rev. Lloyd West officiated. Mrs. Little, 64, died March 22. Born March
30, 1932 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Mrs. Little was the oldest of
nine children. She grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas. In 1981, she
moved to Detroit and became a member of Believing Church of God and Christ.
She was married twice. She is survived by her mother, Bessie Brewer; sons,
Roger Brewer and Calvin Cooper; a daughter-in-law; six grandchildren;
three sisters; five brothers; three aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews
and cousins. Funeral arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home.
Interment was at Detroit memorial Park West. (Michigan Chronicle, April

LOGAN - Lacey C. Logan
- Services for Lacey Charles Logan, brother of Michigan Chronicle Publisher
Sam Logan, were held Feb. 13 at Burns Avenue Seventh-Day Adventist Church
with Pastor James Humphreys officiating. Mr. Logan died Feb. 9. He was
62. Born Dec. 11, 1934 in Hanseveille, Louisiana, Mr. Logan moved
to Detroit at an early age. Educated in the Detroit Public Schools, he
later married the former Vinmore Taylor. Known as Chuck or L.C.,
Mr. Logan had been employed by the BUDD Wheel Company of Detroit for 30
years. He retired in 1984. Devoted to his family, he enjoyed sharing the
hospitality of his home with family and friends for celebrations. Among
his favorite hobbies was fishing. In addition to brother Samuel Logan
Jr., Mr. Logan is survived by his children, Kirk Logan, Kim Logan Nowlin,
Renee Logan-Humphreys, Darlene Brown Brides and Cornell Bell; numerous
grandchildren; mother, Ollie Logan Green; sister, Marie Green, and many
other relatives. Arrangements were handled by Johnson Funeral Home. Interment
was at Gethsemane Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, February 19-25, 1996

LOVE - Collis L. Love
- Services for Collis Lee Love were held Jan. 8 at Faith Redemption Center
with the Rev. Scotty Jones officiating. Mr. Love, 67, died Jan. 2. Born
June 2, 1929 in Grove Hill, Alabama, Mr. Love was educated in the
Alabama school system. Employed as a skilled dye setter for 27 years at
the Chrysler Corp. Sterling Plant, he retired in 1993. His hobbies included
working on cars, boating, gardening and fishing. Mr. Love is survived
by his wife, Patricia; sons, Daryl, Cornelius and Collis Jr.; daughter,
Carla; stepsons, Neal Jackson and Derrick Reed; 15 grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; mother, Mattie Love; brother, Sidney Jr.; sisters, Gladys
McBride and Bernice Redmond, and many others. Arrangements were handled
by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery. (Michigan

MAJORS - Victoria D. Majors
- The Rev. Marjorie Scott officiated at the October 12 services held for
Victoria D. Majors at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. Majors died
October 4. She was 92. Born July 7, 1904 in Savannah, Georgia,
Mrs. Majors was educated in the Savannah public schools. In 1928 she moved
to Florida, where she married the late Reuben William Henry
Majors. The couple later moved to Detroit. An astute business woman,
Mrs. Majors owned and operated restaurants and concessions in Ohio, Florida
and Detroit, which she operated until her retirement. She is survived
by her sons, Victor, Albert and Bert; daughters, Savonia Mathews, Virginia
Fields and Viola Walker, and many other relatives. Arrangements were handled
by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at United Memorial Gardens. (Michigan

MALLORY - Doris E. Mallory
- Services for Doris Ellen Mallory were held Thursday, March 6, at Dexter
Chapel with Bishop Phillip A. Pulliam officiating. Mrs. Mallory was 75
when she died on February 28. Doris Mallory was born December 4, 1921
in Waycross, Georgia to Leona and Emanuel Ellen. She attended Georgia
State University where she earned a degree in economics. Upon moving to
Detroit she met and married Robert Mallory. They had two children. Mrs.
Mallory worked for the Detroit School Board until her retirement. Left
behind to cherish beautiful memories of Doris Ellen Mallory are sons Robert
Jr. and Roland; three grandchildren, Colin, Joseph and Micaela; two sisters,
Juliett and Eleanor; one brother, Sunny; and many other relatives and
friends. Thompson Funeral Home handled arrangements. Interment was at

MALONE - Sarah L. Malone
- Services were held at Liberty Temple Church, March 15, for Sarah Louise
Malone, with the Rev. Ralph L. Hart officiating. Mrs. Malone, 70, died
March 9. Born September 3, 1926 in Holly Springs, Mississippi,
Mrs. Malone, known as "Be-Bop" by her family, later moved to
Detroit and became a dedicated member of Liberty Temple Church. She is
survived by her sons, Thomas, Prentiss and Dwyan; daughters, Sandra Bain,
Debra Malone, Nedra Malone and Kimela Malone; eighteen grandchildren;
sister Ida B. Faulkner, and many others. Interment was at Detroit Memorial
Park West. Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. (Michigan

MANN - Ollie-Bell Mann
- Services for Ollie-Bell Rosetha Mann were held February 15 at All Nations
Congregational COGIC. Mrs. Mann was 62 years old. She died February 11.
Born August 28, 1934, Mrs. Mann was educated in the Ferndale School System.
Mrs. Mann is survived by seven children, four daughter-in-laws, sixteen
grandchildren, three sisters, five brothers and a host of other family
members. Arrangements were made by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was

MARTIN - Cora Cleo Martin
- Last rites for Cora Cleo Martin were held Friday, Dec. 27, in the Thompson
Funeral Home Dexter chapel. Officiating was Bishop Phillip Pulliam. Mrs.
Martin died at the age of 86. Born February 18, 1908 in Hamilton, Mississippi,
she married Cuedelous Martin in 1924 and they became the parents
of five children. Mr. Martin died in 1982 after 58 years of marriage.
Mrs. Martin was a member of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. She is survived
by a daughter, Ethel Martin; two sons, Clarence and Robert Martin; ten
grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and other relatives. Burial was
at Forest Hill Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, January 22-28, 1997, page

MATTHEWS - Printes L.
Matthews - Services for Printes Lee Matthews, 79, were held Feb. 3
at St. John CME Church with the Rev. Tony Henderson officiating. Mr. Matthews
died Feb. 3. Born Feb. 6, 1917 in Thomaston, Georgia, Mr. Matthews
moved to Detroit in 1942. He married the late Wynell Burton in
1948. Raising his children as a single parent, he had worked a variety
of jobs to support his family, who he had always kept upper most in his
mind. In 1965 he married Ottis Dean Walker and took on an additional
child. Mr. Matthews retired in 1981 from the Chrysler Corp. with a perfect
attendance record after 35 years of service. Following his retirement
he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Matthews is survived by his daughters, Antoinette
White and Cheryl; sons, Bruce, Dwayne, Eric and Darin; grandchildren,
Bruce Jr., Veronica, Jeremy, Denay and Jarwin Jr.; brothers, Marion, Arnishel,
Clinton and Sanford; sisters, Alvesta Barnes and Edna Hopson, and many
others. Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home. Interment

MCCALL - Lewis McCall
Jr. - Services for Lewis McCall were held January 25 at Swanson Funeral
Home with the Reverend Alonzo Edwards officiating. Mr. McCall was 81 years
old. Born July 25, 1915 in Clarkton, North Carolina, Mr. McCall
is survived by his wife, Cleo; sister, Lauara Dell; five grandchildren;
13 great-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four daughters-in-law;
and a host of other family members. Arrangements were made by Swanson
Funeral Home. Interment was at Trinity Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle,

MCCRACKEN - Willia L.
McCracken - Willia Leah McCracken, 96, was born May 12, 1900 in Crockett,
Texas. She was one of three children born to the late Mary Elizabeth
and Professor J. W. Williams. In 1922, Leah was married to Elder Hane
McCracken of the Presbyterian Church. She and her husband were both very
active. Mr. McCracken died April 1. She is survived by a son, a daughter-in-law,
seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
Services were held April 5th at Greater Grace Temple, 19161
Schaefer in Detroit. Final arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral

MCCREARY - Gertie M. McCreary
- The Rev. Al Hamilton officiated at the Feb. 1 services held for Gertie
M. McCreary at John Wesley AME Zion Church. Mrs. McCreary, 80, died Jan.
26. Born in Mobile, Alabama on Nov. 1, 1916, Mrs. McCreary was
educated in the Detroit Public Schools, graduating from Northeastern High
School. Married to the late Edward McCreary in 1933, she was among
the first Black women to work as a conductorette on the street cars during
World War II. Following the war, she attended the Fleming Beauty and Barber
College. Following graduation, Mrs. McCreary worked as a cosmetologist
for 40 years. A long-time member of John Wesley AME, she served on the
Senior Usher Board, Deaconess Board and the Life Members Council. Mrs.
McCreary also volunteered at the Detroit Police Department. Over the years
she had received many awards, including ones from the president, the governor
and the mayor. Mrs. McCreary is survived by her daughters, Janice Berry
and Edwina Jasper; 10 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren,
sisters, Renetta Asberry and Helen English, and many other relatives.
Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home. Interment was at Woodmere

MCCREE - Priscilla McCree
- Services for Priscilla McCree were held Feb. 12 at Greater Macedonia
Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Artis Ruff officiating. Mrs. McCree died
Feb. 6. Born Priscilla Reed in Francisville, Louisiana,
Mrs. McCree was educated in the public schools of Shelby, Mississippi.
She relocated to Detroit in 1938 and joined Greater Macedonia Baptist
Church. She had been an active member of the Myrtle Polk Sunday School,
Fannie Harwood Missionary Circle, Club Macedonia and the senior choir
until her health failed. She was also a member of the NAACP and the C.W.
Morris Memorial Scholarship Committee. Affectionately called "Auntie,"
she worked with numerous political and neighborhood groups. She also enjoyed
nourishing her family with the results of her vegetable garden. She had
been employed at the Briggs Plant for a few years and worked for the French
family for more than 30 years. She had continued doing domestic work until
poor health forced her to retire. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Robert. Mrs. McCree is survived by her cousins, Henry Park and Emma Anderson;
nieces, Hattie Cotton-Jones and Rubie Riley-Coleman, and many others.
Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Gethsemane

MCGILL - Scherryl A. McGill
- The Reverend Martin Bolton officiated at the December 11 services held
for Scherryl Ann McGill at People Community Church. Mrs. McGill, 46, died
December 5. Born May 29, 1950, Mrs. McGill graduated from Central High
School in 1968. She later attended Detroit Business School and Virginia
Farrell School of Cosmetology. Affectionately known as Susie, Mrs. McGill
had been employed by the federal government for 14 years, working at the
data center and tank arsenal. She also assisted her father, William Dudley,
in his family-run business, Mr. T. Fine Cleaners. She was later employed
at Health Alliance Plan. A member of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, she
was known as a loving woman who nurtured everyone she came in contact
with. Mrs. McGill is survived by her husband, Lawrence; son, Michael;
father, William; step-mother, Gladys; brother, Ronald; sister, Emma Gullegde,
and many others. Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home.
Interment was at Memorial Park-East. (Michigan Chronicle, December 24

MCINTYRE - Melvin James
McIntyre Jr. - Last rites for Melvin James McIntyre Jr. were held
Tuesday, Dec. 31 in the Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. Officiating
was the Rev. Eddie Flounory. Mr. McIntyre died December 26 at the age
of 59. Born Feb. 21, 1937 in Georgianna, Alabama, he was a graduate
of that city's Robert L. Austin High School. He joined St. John AME Zion
Church at an early age and served as secretary of the Sunday School and
member of the Young Adult Choir. Mr. McIntyre moved to Detroit at the
age of 17 and worked as a cement finisher until his health began to fail.
Fondly called "Big Mac" by his friends, he was a founder of
the Road Runner Motorcycle Club and served as president. Survivors include
his wife, Frances; son, Tyrone; daughters, Beatrice, Darlene, Felicia,
Lori, Tara and Dana; his mother, three bothers, Richard, Oliver and Andrew,
and many other relatives. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle,

MCKINNEY - Henry D. McKinney
- Bishop Jessie T. Stacks officiated at the Jan. 18 services held for
Henry Dallas McKinney at Swanson Funeral Home. Mr. McKinney, 93, died
January 13. Born Dec. 8, 1903 in Summerville, Tennessee, Mr. McKinney
was an early African American businessman on Detroit's east side. He was
married to the late Celia Ann Duke. Known as Hank, he was known
as a hardworking, honest man. Owner/operator of service stations located
at Mack Avenue and St. Aubin, and another at Dubois and Forest, the McKinney
Standard stations became institutions in the community, providing jobs
for many young people in the area. In addition to his service stations,
Mr. McKinney had worked for United Parcel Service (UPS). He retired after
30 years of service. Mr. McKinney is survived by his children, Mary, Rosetta,
Henry Jr., Mildred, Daisy, Jerry, Pearl, Larry, Henrietta and Shirley;
42 grandchildren, including Dominique and Christopher Walker who helped
care for him; 69 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives. Interment
was at Elmwood Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, March 5-11, 1997, page D-2).
MCLEOD - Mary Lee Banks McLeod
- A celebration of the life of Mother Mary Lee Banks-McLeod was held October
15 at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Charles G. Adams officiating.
Mother McLeod died October 9 at the age of 78. Born March 2, 1918 in Griffin,
Georgia, she moved to Detroit in 1945 and joined the congregation
at Church of our Prayer. She later became a member of United Temple of
Christ, then Hartford Memorial, where she was a member of the Mothers
Board. She is survived by a son, Walter Johnson; daughter, Henrietta
Vann; two brothers, Arthur and Charles Brown; a sister,
Annie Bell Oliver; ten grandchildren, a number of great and great-great-grandchildren,
and many other relatives. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park. Arrangements
were by the Swanson Funeral Home. (Michigan Chronicle, December 31 - January

MCNAIRY - Mary McNairy -
Services were held for Mrs. Mary Etta McNairy on March 27 at King Solomon
Baptist Church. Rev. John Cole officiated. Mrs. McNairy, 78, died on March
21 at Beaumont Hospital after a long illness. Born on January 7, 1919
in Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. McNairy moved with her family to
Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1927. She graduated from the Manual Arts
High School there in 1937 and attended Kansas Vocational College in Topeka,
Kansas where she majored in music. After a seven-year marriage, Mrs. McNairy
moved to Chicago where she worked at the Martin and Morris Music
Publishing Company as a music notation transcriber and sheet music demonstrator.
The company was owned by the gospel soloist, Mrs. Sallie Martin and Professor
Kenneth Morris. IN 1948, Mrs. McNairy helped start the Victory Singers,
a Chicago-area church choir directed by Mrs. McNairy's aunt, the late
Mrs. Jeannette Sims, who was a well known church musician and affiliated
with the "Southland "Spirituals" radio broadcast. The Victory
Singers appeared in concert and on local Chicago radio shows and began
touring other cities in the midwest. Mrs. McNairy and aunt moved to Detroit
in 1950 and soon reorganized the Victory Singers with Detroit singers.
The group became the Victorettes and gained popularity. They toured local
churches throughout the state and midwestern, northern and southern states.
They were featured weekly on the "Southland Spirituals" radio
broadcast on WJLB on Sunday mornings. Mrs. McNairy's daughter, Mary Louise
Morris was a member of the group from 1953 to 1960. At that time she married
and moved to Harbor City, California where she and her husband currently
reside. In 1960, Mrs. McNairy married Deacon Robert McNairy of King Solomon
Baptist Church, where Mrs. McNairy had been a member since 1959. Mr. McNairy
died on June 21, 1960. She served as Minister of Music at King Solomon
from 1971 to 1987 and choir director since 1959. But she was affiliated
with other churches as choir director, including Russell Street and First
Institutional Baptist church, 1950 to 1953; and Pleasant Grove Baptist
Church, 1953 to 1959. Mrs. McNairy is survived by her daughter, Mary Louise;
son-in-law Dwight Morris; grandson, Darren Morris; granddaughter and grandson-in-law,
Cynthea and Ezequiel Magana; nephew and niece-in-law, Elroy and Theresa
Carroll; foster daughter, Mary McKinley; and a host of relatives. Interment
was at Metropolitan Memorial Park. Arrangements were handled by James
H. Cole Home for Funerals Inc. (Michigan Chronicle, April 9-15, 1997,

MCQUEEN - Wyatt A. McQueen
- Services for Wyatt Aaron McQueen were held Dec. 28 at the Greenfield
chapel of Thompson Funeral Homes with Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiating.
Mr. McQueen died Dec. 17. He was 38. Born December 29, 1958 in Detroit,
Mr. McQueen was educated in the Detroit Public Schools system. Known to
family and friends as "Earp," they say Mr. McQueen will be remembered
for his great athletic ability and true sportsmanship. A veteran of the
U.S. Army, he received an honorable discharge in 1977. He is survived
by his wife, Reva McQueen; sons, Wyatt A. Drew, Marcus A. Burk and twins
Keanta and Deante McQueen; stepchildren, Andre and Omari Brown and Kea
Raqryah Trotly; granddaughter, Devion Boyd; parents, Mayme and John McQueen
Sr.; brothers, John Jr. and Calvin; sisters, Kathryn A. Carafelli, Darrielle
L. McQueen and LaVesta R. McQueen, and many others. Interment was at Grand

MIXON - Owhedon Holding-Mixon
- Services were held at St. Phillip's Missionary Baptist Church, April
25, for Owhedon Holding-Mixon, with Rev. Theron Hodges Sr. Officiating.
Mrs. Holding-Mixon, 62, died April 17. Born March 23, 1935 in Montgomery,
Alabama, Mrs. Holding-Mixon moved to Detroit in 1947. She was employed
by Botsford Health Center in Farmington, where she worked as a Supervising
Geriatric Aide. She received various awards of recognition and enjoyed
her work immensely. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren,
and sewing and working with arts and crafts. She was the top of her millinery
class at Wayne State University. Mrs. Holding-Mixon is survived by her
husband, Ervin Mixon; daughters, Sharon Lewis, Valerie Myles and Crystal
Rucker; son, Robert L. Holding Jr.; stepchildren, Shirley, James, Mae,
Gerald, Albert and Olivia; grandchildren, Michael, Shayla, Erica, Craig,
Marquita, Andre and Brian; sister, Sandra Lee; brother, Hollis Parks;
and many others. Interment was at Westlawn Cemetery in Wayne. Arrangements

MOORE - Bennie Wade Moore
- Services for Bennie Wade Moore were held Monday, December 23, at Central
United Methodist Church. The Reverend Edwin A. Rowe officiated. Mr. Moore
died Thursday, December 19, at the age of 83. Born August 31, 1913 in
Lexington, Mississippi, he was educated in the Mississippi Public
Schools system and attended Alcorn College. A U.S. Army veteran, he moved
to Detroit in 1945 and worked at Chrysler Corporation from which he retired
as a supervisor. At Central Church, he served as an usher, treasurer,
church school superintendent and with the United Methodist Men. He was
a former worshipful master of Prince Hall Lodge No. 24. Mr. Moore is survived
by his wife, Florine; two daughters, Joyce and Benetta; two grandchildren,
William Thomas Jr. and Carylin Joyce; a great-granddaughter,
JaiDa Ayante, and many other family members. Arrangements were
handled by the Thompson Funeral Home. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery.

MOORE - Bobby Moore - Pastor
Normal Allen II officiated at the December 20 services held for Bobby
Moore at the Thompson Funeral Home Dexter chapel. Mr. Moore, 59, died
December 15. Born December 22, 1936 in Kansas City, Missouri, Mr.
Moore was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he had won the boxing Golden
Gloves Award. Employed for 30 years at Carboloy Inc., he was well liked
and respected by his co-workers. An avid reader, Mr. Moore also enjoyed
sports and music. Mr. Moore is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Moore and
Haussa Farrackan; stepson, Lamont Farrackan; daughter, Cricia Farrackan;
stepdaughters, Karolyn and Sharon House; grandchildren, Paris,
Taneesha, Trina, Shantey, Shawn and Daron, and many other relatives. (Michigan

MOORE - James H. Moore
- Services for James Howard Moore were held January 17 at the Murdock
Funeral home with the Rev. Beverly Brooks officiating. Mr. Moore, 66,
died January 10. Born May 30, 1930, Mr. Moore was educated in the Detroit
Public Schools system. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he fought in the Korean
War, serving in Company B, 44th Armored Infantry Division. Mr. Moore was
employed by Michigan Metable for many years until the company relocated.
He was also briefly employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler.
He retired in 1993 from a prominent Detroit hotel. An avid jazz fan, he
was known to frequent area jazz clubs where his late brother Donald played
saxophone. With a basic Christian belief in God, Mr. Moore attended church
at Rose of Sharon COGIC and Bethel AME Church. Mr. Moore is survived by
his wife, Barbara; children, Felicia, Vincent and Ronald; sisters, Barbara
Roundtree and Renelda Moore; brothers, Samuel, Kent, Norris, Harold and
Jackie Moore; sister-in-law, Juanita, Augustene, Rosalee, Mother Jerry
Moore and Maggie Moore; brother-in-law Andrew Jackson; aunt, Marie C.
Bailey, and many other relatives. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park-West.

MORROW - Clara LeGrange
Ovetta Morrow - Services for former educator Clara LaGrange Ovetta
Berry Morrow were held Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Warren Avenue Baptist Church.
Mrs. Morrow, who taught here at Northeastern High School, died Jan. 25
at the age of 97. Born in 1908 in Uniontown, Alabama, she began
her teaching career after graduating from Lincoln Normal and Industrial
School in Marian, Alabama. She married the late Freddie Morrow and they
became the parents of 13 children. After moving to Detroit in 1941, Mrs.
Morrow joined the congregation at Warren Avenue Baptist Church where she
served with many church auxiliaries through the years. She was active
in community service with the George Elementary School Parent-Teacher
Club, the Helping Hands Guild of Detroit, 4-H Club and Focus: HOPE auxiliaries.
She was also featured in a Focus: HOPE public service commercial. Her
professional affiliations included the Northeastern Student Faculty Parent
Community Council, National Congress of Parents and Teachers of Chicago
and the Detroit Retired Teachers Organization. Twice elected "Mother
of the Year," she was recipient of many plaques and other awards
for her service to the community and mankind, including providing clothes
for the needy, helping the homeless and hungry, and taking in abandoned
and problem children. Mrs. Morrow is survived by five daughters, Anna
Hampton, Lillie DeCuir, Effie Creighton, Pamela Bohler and Doretta Sisco;
two sons, John and Jackson Morrow; 36 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren,
three great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives. Burial was at
Mount Hope Cemetery in Livonia. Arrangements were handled by the O. H.

MULLEN - Willie M. Mullen
- Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the Feb. 15 services held for Willie
Mae Mullen at the Dexter chapel of Thompson Funeral Homes. Mrs. Mullen
died Feb. 11. She was 84. Born Aug. 9, 1912 in New Castle, Alabama,
Mrs. Mullen moved to Detroit with her family in 1920 where she attended
St. John CME Church until her health failed. Educated in the Detroit Public
Schools, she graduated magnum cum laude at the age of 16 from Northeastern
High School. She later earned her beautician degree from Poro Cosmetology
Institute and then became an instructor at the institute. Married to the
late Thomas J. Mullen, their child, Ellen Francis, also preceded
her in death. Mrs. Mullen is survived by her daughters, Harvelette Dellihue,
Helen Mays, Barbara McGlown, Caroline Edwards and Mary Anderson; sons,
Samuel Anderson and William Rhodes; nine grandchildren, mother, Mary Frances
Scott and many others. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park-East. (Michigan

MURPHY - Rosie Murphy
- Services for Rosie "Mama Rose" Murphy were held January 31
at New Liberty Missionary Baptist church. Mrs. Murphy, 78, died on January
26. Born Rosie B. Weatherspoon on August 9, 1918, in Whiteville, Tennessee,
Mrs. Murphy married the late Jerry Lee Murphy in 1938. She moved to Detroit
in 1958 and became an active member of New Liberty Missionary Baptist
Church. She is survived by one son, Jim; five daughters, Florine Brewer,
Lois McCurrie, Ernestine Edwards, Gladys Robinson and E. Ada Murphy; a
stepdaughter, Clara Riley of Chicago; sons-in-law David Brewer, Joe Randolph
and Eddie Robinson; daughter-in-law Vassie Murphy; sisters, L. Francis
Beard of St. Louis and Maine Anderson; s special daughter, Diane Batic;
30 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews
and cousins. Interment was at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangement

MURRIEL - James W. Murriel
- Services for James Wilbert Murriel were held Feb. 8 at the Dexter chapel
of Thompson Funeral Homes. Mr. Murriel died Jan. 30 at Veterans Hospital.
He was 49. Born Dec. 6, 1947 in Crockett County, Tennessee, Mr.
Murriel moved to Detroit after graduating from Rosenwald High School in
1965. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he returned
to Detroit where he was employed by General Motors. Married to Marilyn
Graham in 1972, he retired from GM in 1991. Mr. Murriel is survived by
his daughters, Sharon and Melissa; grandchildren, Tekyra and Tyre; sisters,
Josephine, Linda and Wilma; brothers, Charlie, Sylvester, Dwight, Roy
and Rickey, and many other relatives. Interment was at Mt. Hope Memorial

NASH - Howard A. Nash
- Dr. Charles Adams officiated at the Feb. 22 services held for Howard
A. Nash at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church. Born Feb. 2, 1919 in Muncie,
Indiana, Mr. Nash was educated in Muncie and Dayton, Ohio. A veteran of
the Army, he received numerous medals while serving. Following his discharge
he located in Detroit where he married Anne Fox in 1949. The couple later
moved to Newark, New Jersey and Virginia Beach, Virginia before returning
to Detroit in 1990. An avid sports fan, Mr. Nash enjoyed playing golf
and traveling with his wife. They were both members of Hartford. In addition
to his wife, Mr. Nash is survived by his sons, Reginald and Ronald; brothers,
James and George Sims; sisters, Lucretia Lewis and Fannie Williams, and
many others. Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Home. Interment

NIXON - John Nixon
- Services for John Nixon were held March 10 at Second Ebenezer Baptist
Church. Mr. Nixon, 87, died March 3, following a short illness. Born May
8, 1909 in Lawrence County, Alabama, Mr. Nixon later moved to Carnegie,
Pennsylvania where he spent many of his formative years. While living
in Pennsylvania, Mr. Nixon worked in the coal mines. He moved to Detroit
with his family in 1946, where he was employed for 26 years by Great Lakes
Steel. After his retirement, he opened John Nixon's Total Service Station.
Mr. Nixon is survived by his wife, Pollie; son, John W. Nixon; daughter,
Jacqueline Weaver; grandsons, Sgt. Armel D. Weaver and Eric G. Weaver;
granddaughter, Dawn Kincade; four great grandchildren; and many others.
Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Evergreen

NORFLEET - General Norfleet,
Jr. - Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated at the December 16 services
held for General Norfleet Jr. at the Thompson Funeral Home Dexter chapel.
Mr. Norfleet died December 11 at the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital Medical
Center. He was 46. Born October 14, 1950 in Detroit, Mr. Norfleet was
educated in the Detroit Public Schools. Known to family and friends as
"Junior," Mr. Norfleet had been employed only periodically because
of poor health. He was known as a man who lived life to the fullest. Mr.
Norfleet is survived by his children, Candi, Demetrius, Latiesha and Shalanda;
one granddaughter; mother, Margaret Norfleet-Bettis; brother, Gerald
Norfleet; sisters, Wanda Norfleet and Carolyn Johnson, and many

OGLETREE - Claude H. Ogletree
- Services for Claude Ogletree were held April 22 at St. Peter AME Church
with Rev. Reginald Carter officiating. He was 77 when he died on April
19. Mr. Ogletree was born Nov. 27, 1919 in Stovall, Georgia. He
served in the United States Armed Services where he earned the rank of
sergeant and received a bronze medal for heroic services. In 1944 Mr.
Ogletree moved to Detroit. He worked for the Chrysler Corporation for
30 years. Mr. Ogletree is survived by his wife, Lula; grandson, Robert
Conwell; six sisters, Jewel Ellison, Carrie Lewis, Rosa Lee Gerald, Margie
Buckley, Ruth Baron and Mable Greason; three brothers, James, Charles
and Emanuel; an uncle, Roosevelt Ogletree; two sisters-in-law, Lucy Johnson
and Gertrude Swain; and a host of other relatives. Arrangements were made

OGLETREE - Olga Ogletree
- Services for Olga Ogletree were held March 8 at St. Peter AME Zion Church
in Hamtramck. Rev. Reginald D. Carter officiated at the service. Mrs.
Ogletree died March 4. Mrs. Ogletree was born September 12, 1910 in Mobile,
Alabama, then moved to Wilmington, Delaware at age four with her family
and to Detroit at age 8. She was educated in the Detroit Public Schools.
At age 12 she joined St. Paul AME Church and remained a member until 1934,
when she joined St. Peter where she served in the senior choir and as
a honorary member of the Stewardess Board. She married in 1928. Mrs. Ogletree
is survived by her husband, Roosevelt; five daughters, Victorine Cowins,
Roselyn Bills, Hazel Cowan, Marian Sims and Fay Flowers; four sons, William,
James, Richard and Gerald; daughters-in-law, Francis, Edith, Madeline
and Greta; sons-in-law, Ferrell Cowan, Thurston Sims and Willie Flowers;
23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements were handled by the Thompson Funeral Home. Interment was

O'NEAL - Ruby Mae O'Neal
- Services for Ruby Mae O'Neal were held at Zion Hope Missionary Baptist
Church October 26 with the Reverend Harry Bishop officiating. Mrs. O'Neal,
69, died October 19 in St. John Hospital. Born October 4, 1927 in Clarksdale,
Cohoma, Mississippi, Mrs. O'Neal moved to Detroit in 1951. A member
of Zion Hope Missionary Baptist since 1978, she served as Sunday School
teacher, assistant superintendent and as member of the Courtesy Committee.
She retired from Alpha Annex Nursing home in 1989. Mrs. O'Neal is survived
by her husband, Walter; children, Alicia Weems, Phyllis C. Allison;
Zarryl, Kelvin, Shawnmaine and Trena Urlisa; stepchildren, Peggy,
Walter Jr., Matthew Heard, Cassandra, Tammie and Latryce; 12 grandchildren;
15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many others. Interment
was at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Swanson

ORANGE - Harold B. Orange
Sr. - The Rev. Samuel Ward Jr. officiated at the Jan. 6 services held
for Harold Benjamin Orange Sr. at Swanson Funeral Home. Mr. Orange died
Dec. 30. He was 72. Born August 21, 1924 in Detroit, Mr. Orange had an
early love of trains and art. He began etchings and water colors at age
10. A graduate of Miller High School, he was an outgoing teenager who
received much recognition for his many talents, including roller skating,
tap dancing, comedy and photography. In 1946 he married Dorothy Franklin.
The couple divorced nine years later. In 1949 he began his 31-year career
with the U.S. Postal Service. he retired with honorable recognition in
1980. Mr. Orange is survived by his daughters, Dorlena and Suzette; grandchildren,
Laneen, Kallene, Naticka, Kara and Kenyatta; great-grandchildren, Njeri
and Richard; siblings, Doris, Joyce, Walter, Frederick and Raymond, and
many other relatives. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park-East. (Michigan

OWENS - Janie Owens
- Funeral Services were held Friday, March 14 at St. Frances Missionary
Baptist church for Janie Bell Owens, who made her transition on March
8. She was 88. Dr. David G. Speller officiated. Mrs. Owens was born to
William Mahan and Henrietta Toya on March 15, 1919 in Perry,
Alabama. She was one of their ten children. Her first marriage was
to George Hubbard; after his death she married Jeff Owens and moved to
Baltimore. Mrs. Owens had accepted Christ at an early age. After moving
to Detroit she joined True Gospel Missionary Baptist Church, and later
joined St. Frances Missionary Baptist. Mrs. Owens was employed at the
Glen L. Martin plant as a welder, and also worked at continental Canning
Company and as a teacher's aide for the Detroit Board of Education. Left
behind to cherish the wonderful memories of Janie B. Owens are daughters,
Marjorie Hill, Zola Knight Faust, Janie Vollman and Bonita Withers; three
sons, Jeff Owens Jr., Henry Barksdale and Frank Owens; one sister, Beatrice
Martin; three brothers, Vincent and William Mahan; 32 grandchildren, 49
great-grandchildren, 30 great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

PAGE - Charles E. Page
- The Rev. Benjamin Baker officiated at the Feb. 12 services held for
Charles Page at New Light Baptist Church. Mr. Page died Feb. 7 at Harper
Hospital. He was 67. Born in Rogersville, Alabama on Feb. 15, 1929,
Mr. Page moved to Detroit as an infant. After attending Northwestern High
School he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Mr. Page
is survived by his wife, Alberta; children, Charles Jr., Linda and Traci;
grandchildren, Brian, Tony, Tabria, Nicole, Lauren and Alana; father,
Leo; siblings, Leo Jr., Elwood, Geraldine, Dorothy, Barbara, Gloria, Carol,

PATTERSON - John C. Patterson
- Services for John Cedric Patterson were held at the Thompson Funeral
Home Dexter chapel. Mr. Patterson, 46, died Jan. 24. Family and friends
came to the services to celebrate his life. A graduate of Northwestern
High School, Mr. Patterson was employed in his lifetime as both a bus
driver and a mail delivery person. He was known for his determination
to live a fun-filled life and was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Mr. Patterson is survived by a sister, Patrice Patterson, three daughters,

Frank Peak in 1952. Rev. Peak is survived by three children, Fernando,

PERRY - Derek Martin Perry

of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Mr. Perry is survived by his parents, Kenneth
and Helen Perry; three brothers, Charles, George and Rodney; a sister,

PERRY - Johnnie W. Perry
- Services for Johnnie W. Perry were held Jan. 18 at the Greenfield chapel

83, died Jan. 12 in his home. Born Jan 4, 1914 in Memphis, Tennessee,
Mr. Perry was educated in the Memphis Public School system. He later married
Dorothy and they had one child, Johnnie Jr. Mr. Perry is survived by his

James, Selina, Antwoine, Ashley, Arleise and Cordero; sisters, Beatrice

PETEET - Chauncey Peteet
Sr. - Services for businessman Chauncey Edward Peteet Sr. were held
Monday, March 17, at Fellowship Chapel with the Rev. Wendell Anthony officiating.
Mr. Peteet, owner of Peteet Realty in Oak Park, died March 12 at the age
of 51. Born January 16 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, he resided in
Chicago before moving to Detroit in 1972. He was employed by the Chrysler
Corp. until earning his real estate license and working full-time as an
agent and later as a broker. He and his wife Marcia opened their real
estate business in Detroit in 1988 and later moved into their own building
in Oak Park. Mr. Peteet also served on the Oak Park board of Review. In
addition to his wife, he is survived by his father, R.L.; mother, Elenia;
two sons, Chauncey El Jr., and Patrick; a daughter, Dorchaune; five grandchildren,
Chauncey El III, Calvin Pride, Jasmine and Denzel Gradford El and Jacon
Giles El; a brother, Buford; six sisters, Ollie Guyton, Cora McClellan;
Gina, Carolyn Bishop, Arlene Atwater, Glennie V. Cobbs and other relatives.

QUARLES - Roger Quarles
- Roger Quarles, 65, died in his home on March 10. He was born in Memphis,
Tennessee and was the eldest son of the late Roger Quarles Sr. And
Marie Quarles. Mr. Quarles was educated in the Detroit Public School system.
He was an avid reader and excelled in his knowledge of sports and world
history. He contributed editorial viewpoints for the plant newspaper "The
Pioneer." His 38 years of employment with Chrysler Corp. was temporarily
interrupted by a two-year stint with the U.S. Armed Forces in the Korean
Conflict. Before his 1989 retirement from Chrysler, he was a staunch UAW
supporter, vigorously pursuing political campaigns and labor issues a
plant committeeman. Mr. Quarles is survived by his wife, Agnes and stepson,
Steven; his daughter, Stacy Samuels; mother, Marie Quarles; sisters, Serita
Woods and Berti Jo Rosser; grandchildren, Craig, Joshua and Traci; nephew,
Ronald woods; nieces, Sharla Woods and Nichole Rosser; grandnieces, Taj,
Danielle, Courtney and Brianne; and a host of other relatives and friends.

RAGIN - Lorraine Ragin -
Services for Lorraine Ragin were held Feb. 8 at the Greenfield chapel

Alabama on December 1, 1938, Mrs. Ragin was educated in Alabama. After
living in New York, she married Stanley Ragin. The couple moved to Detroit
in 1966. Employed as a book binder at Graphics Enterprise, she remained
there until her health became poor in 1996. In addition to her husband,
Mrs. Ragin is survived by her daughter, Tanga; grandson, Jasper; mother,
Sarah Gunn; sister, Ernestine Tyus; brothers, John, Charlie and Jesse

RAGSDALE - Shirley M.
Ragsdale - The Rev. Richard P. Wilson officiated at the January 11

Ragsdale, 51, died January 6. Born Shirley Walker on February 13, 1945
in Bolton, Mississippi, she later married Bobby Joe Ragsdale.

RAY - Lillian Ray
- Services were held at Apostolic Way Church of God, March 11 for Lillian
Ray, with Bishop Eugene Thompkins, officiating. Mrs. Ray, 85, died March
6. Born Nov. 9, 1911 in Trezvent, Tennessee, Mrs. Ray attended
public school in Trezvent. She worked at Steinier Lighting Company, retiring
in 1969. A kind and loving person, Mrs. Ray is survived by her sons, John
Lee Beals and James Arthur Ray; daughters, Myrtle Murray, Rebecca Burston
and Elsie Stevenson; eleven grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four
great-great-grandchildren; sister, Raynell Hughes; and many others. Interment
was at Detroit Memorial Park West in Redford. Arrangements were handled

REAVES - Chestine Reaves
- Services for Chestine Reaves were held February 12 at Womack Temple
CME Church in Inkster with the Rev. Terrel A. Jackson officiating. Mrs.
Reaves, 92, died February 7. Born Chestine Adams in Rhine, Georgia
on February 20, 1904, she received her early education in Rhine. After
marrying the late Mr. Percy N. Reaves the couple moved to Inkster where
Mrs. Reaves continued her education at Inkster High School. A member of
Womack Temple for 56 years, she served in the church choir, as a Sunday
school teacher, on the Stewardess Board and Missionary Society. Active
in the Detroit Missionary Society since 1941, Mrs. Reaves served as vice
president and later president, a post she held for 19 years. She was also
president emeritus of the Board of Christian Education Expansion Committee,
Michigan-Indiana Conference Trustee Board, Nominating Committee of the
Michigan-Indiana Conference, and many more. Active in the community, she
had received numerous awards from various city, state and county officials.
She was active in the Easter Seals, Cancer Society, Inkster Senior Citizens
Club, Top Ladies of Distinction, was honored as 1991 Woman of the Year
by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Zeta Nu Zeta chapter of Inkster and many other
organizations. Mrs. Reaves is survived by her daughter, Eva Thomas; grandchildren,
Diana Cruse, Pamela Brown, Linda Rounds, Cheryl Jones, Harold, Samuel
and David Thomas; 18 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren,
and many other relatives. Arrangements were handled by Penn Funeral Home.

REYNOLDS - James H. Reynolds
- Services for James Harold Reynolds were held Thursday, Jan. 30 in the
Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield Chapel. Mr. Reynolds died Friday, January
24 at the age of 65. Born June 13, 1931 in Macon, Georgia, he attended
the public schools there, graduating from Hudson High and Industrial School.
He served in the military with the Army and Air Force. Following discharges
from both branches, he was employed by the federal government in Washington,
D.C. Mr. Reynolds is survived by a son, Mark; four sisters, Teola Halloway,
Elma Armstrong, Ozzie Jones and Eula Clark; two brothers, Odis and Willie
McCoy, and other relatives. Burial was at Detroit Memorial Park-West.

REYNOLDS - Louis J. Reynolds
- Last rites for Louis J. Reynolds were held Saturday, Jan. 25 in the
Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiated.
Mr. Reynolds died Monday, Jan. 20, at the age of 55. Born April 28, 1941
in Talladega, Alabama, he married Sebra Diane Allen in 1963 and
they became the parents of four children. They later became members of
Christ Jesus Baptist Church. Mr. Reynolds survivors include three sons,
Terrance, Louis Jr. and Vondrae; daughter, Dawn; three brothers, James,
Warren and Larry, and other relatives. Burial was at Metropolitan Memorial

RICHARDSON - Barbara J.
Richardson - Services for Barbara Jean Richardson were held Jan. 6
at Metropolitan Baptist Church with the Rev. Darryl Robinson officiating.
Mrs. Richardson, 56, died Jan. 2 at Grace Hospital. Born Barbara Berry
on Feb. 28, 1940 in Selma, Alabama, Mrs. Richardson joined Mt.
Zion Baptist Church in Selma as a youth, where she served with the choir
and usher board. Upon moving to Detroit she joined Hartford Memorial Baptist
Church. She had joined Metropolitan Baptist in 1996. A graduate of R.B.
Hudson High School in Selma, she later attended Wayne County Community
College and Wayne State University. Employed by the State of Michigan,
she was an assistant payment worker with the Family Independence Agency.
She retired in October, 1996. Mrs. Richardson enjoyed cooking, traveling,
ice skating and crocheting. She was known as a helpful, kind, caring person,
devoted to her family and friends, especially her medically challenged
daughter, La Kesha. Mrs. Richardson is survived by her husband, Dawson
Richardson Sr.; children, La Kesha and Dawson Jr.; siblings, Irene Williams,
Ruby Walker, Mary Harvey, Georgia Jones, Bertha Johnson, Ruben Jr., Sammie,
Eugene, James and Samuel Berry Sr., and many other relatives. Arrangements
were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Detroit Memorial

RIDEOUT - Willie Rideout
- Services for William Rideout were held March 11 at St. James Missionary
Baptist Church with pastor James Jennings officiating. Mr. Rideout, 58,
died March 5. Born December 24, 1938 in Cornerstone, Arkansas,
Mr. Rideout was employed at the Detroit News. Mr. Rideout is survived
by his wife, Elaine; six sons, Anthony, Toney, Frankie, Willie, Edward
and Martel; two daughters, Jewell and India; thirteen grandchildren; two
brothers; three sisters and a host of other relatives. Arrangements were
handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery. (Michigan

RODGERS - Paul Tinney Rodgers
Jr. - Services for Paul Tinney Rodgers Jr. were held December 21 in
the Thompson Funeral Home Dexter chapel. Mr. Rodgers died December 12
at the age of 41. Born June 9, 1955, he attended Detroit Public Schools
and Wayne State University, majoring in computers. Athletically gifted,
he played football, baseball and excelled in swimming, and at age 14,
was one of Central High School's youngest lifeguards. He also enjoyed
bowling and participating in Boy Scout activities with his son, Paul Zavier.
A member of Hope Lutheran Church, he traveled throughout Michigan with
the church choir. Mr. Rodgers is survived by his mother, Jackie; sister,
Tinesha; his son, Paul Zavier; daughter, Tisha Michelle; grandfather,
William McFadden; nephew, John Reese, Jr.; long-time friend,
Pauline Robinson, and many other relatives. (Michigan Chronicle,

ROSEMOND - Luther Rosemond
- Services for Luther Henry Rosemond were held at St. John's Presbyterian
Church on March 19. Mr. Rosemond was 85. Born November 30, 1921 in Greenville,
South Carolina, Mr. Rosemond was educated in the Detroit Public Schools
and attended Wayne State University. He was known as a talented and ambitious
man with a strong sense of family values, who rose from an employee at
a gas station to owning the gas station and the garage, the first of the
Rosemond Brothers garages. He worked on the engineering staff at the GM
Warren Tech Center and retired in 1981. Mr. Rosemond was a longtime member
of St. John Presbyterian Church. Mr. Rosemond is survived by his wife,
Ernestine; sons, Luther, Donald and Ernest; daughters-in-law Carolyn and
Barbara; grandchildren, Martin, Portia, Shelby and Tamara; great-grandchild
Sasha; sisters, Mayzell Jones, J. Cloteele Page and Lucille Davenport;
and many other relatives. Arrangement were handled by Thompson Funeral

SAMPSON - Dorthy A. Sampson
- Services for Dorthy Anne Sampson were held December 12 at the Dexter
chapel of Thompson Funeral Home with Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiating.
Mrs. Sampson, 84, died December 7. Born July 23, 1912 in Detroit, Mrs.
Sampson was educated in the Detroit Public Schools. A graduate of Cass
Technical High School, that is where she met her future husband, Robert
Sampson. She later married Julius Dave. Known to family and friends as
"Da", Mrs. Sampson had worked as a domestic and a home nurse.
Always quick to help out family and friends who were ill, she also enjoyed
reading, music, travel and gardening. Devoted to education, she had studied
labor relations at Wayne State University and later, while in her 70s,
studied auto mechanics at Wayne County Community College. Active politically,
Mrs. Sampson had helped in Erma Henderson's election to City Council and
worked many years at the polls, later becoming a precinct captain and
district representative. Mrs. Sampson is survived by her daughters, Audrey
Francis and Cassandra Dixon; grandchildren, Deborah, John,
Dierdra, David and Danielle; five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild;
brother, Calvin, and many others. Arrangements were handled by Thompson
Funeral Home. Cremation took place at Woodlawn Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle,

SAMUEL - Nathaniel T.
Samuel - Services were held for Nathaniel Timothy Samuel on January
24 at Metropolitan Church of God. Rev. Robert O. Dulin officiated. Mr.
Samuel, 82, died January 19. Mr. Samuel was born August 18, 1914 in Macon,
Georgia. In 1928 his family moved to Detroit. He graduated from Northern
High School in 1934. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1971 and started
his own radio and television firm. Mr. Samuel is survived by his wife
Mary Lou; nephews, Robert (Ester) Sampson and Eddie Wingfield Jr.; niece,
Mary (Herman B.) Hearn Sr.; great-nieces, Sharmel Hearn and Diane Benners;
and a host of other relatives. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements
were handled by Swanson Funeral Home Inc. (Michigan Chronicle, March 26

SANDERS - Alex Sanders
Jr. - Last rites for Alex Sanders Jr. were held Tuesday, March 4,
in the Thompson Funeral Home Dexter chapel. Officiating was the Rev. James
Flake. Mr. Sanders died February 26 in Sinai Hospital, three days before
his 65th birthday. Born February 29, 1932 in Birmingham,
Alabama, he received his education in the school system there. A veteran
of the Korean conflict, he worked for Chrysler Gear and Axle for 30 years.
Mr. Sanders is survived by two sisters, Magnolia Hurnes and Geneva Booker;
two brothers, Julius and Glenn; many other relatives and a special lady,
Earline Moore, and her children. Burial was at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery
in Mt. Clemens. (Michigan Chronicle, March 19-25, 1997, page D-5).
SHEPHARD - Jimmie M. Shephard
- Services for Jimmie Marie Shephard were held March 6 at Bethany-Pembroke
Chapel with Brother Owen Frazier officiating. Mrs. Shephard died on February
27. Mrs. Shephard, 86, was born July 3, 1910 in Birmingham, Alabama
and attended the Talladega, Alabama School for the Deaf. She moved to
Detroit in 1918 and attended the Flint School for the Deaf and a lip-reading
school. Mrs. Shephard was a retiree of the American Linen Supply Co. and
longtime church member. She is survived by sons, Clarence, Gerald and
Zeeland; daughters, Bertha Easley, Kathleen Payne, Shirley Garrison, Dolores
Wilson and Jacqueline Clark; 50 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren;
29 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins and relatives. Arrangements
were handled by Thompson Funeral Home. Interment was at Detroit Memorial

SHINGLES - Willie J. Shingles
- Services were held February 1 at Second Ebenezer Baptist church for
Willie James Shingles, 51, who made his transition on January 27. Edgar
Vann Jr., Second Ebenezer pastor, officiated. Mr. Shingles was born February
17, 1946 in Omaha, Georgia to the late Anna and Amos Shingles.
After graduation from Lumpkin High School in 1965, he served in the U.S.
Army, from which he received an honorable discharge in 1974. In 1971 he
married Margaret McCory. He worked at Ford Motor Company for 25 years.
Left behind to cherish the memory of Willie Shingles are his wife, Margaret;
a daughter, Cassandra; a son, Drexel; two grandchildren, four brothers,
five sisters and other relatives. Arrangements were handled by Swanson
Funeral Homes Inc. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle,

SHOREY - Rolando Hayden
Shorey - Rolando Hayden Shorey, executive director of Diversified
Youth Services Inc. of Detroit, died on January 16 at William Beaumont
Hospital. "Rolly," as he was affectionately known, was 49. Born
October 13, 1947 to Doris L. (Shorey) Moulton and George Craighead
of Ecorse, Mr. Shorey graduated from River Rouge High School in 1965 and
went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Langston University in Oklahoma
and a master's degree from Central Michigan University. In 1975 he married
Patricia K. Fields of Romulus and from this union came three children.
Mr. Shorey had a strong interest in youth and stood tall as an advocate
for young people and their families. He was a dynamic and effective workshop
leader and speaker. He served on an array of boards throughout the state,
the most recent being St. Francis Family Services. There was a strong
spiritual dimension in Mr. Shorey's life. As time went on, he grew in
the knowledge of the Lord and ultimately accepted Jesus Christ as his
personal savior. Rolando Hayden Shorey is survived by his wife, Patricia;
two daughters, Alondria and Alaina; one son, Rolando Brandeth; one sister,
Jocylyn A. Moulton of Los Angeles; three brothers, Malcolm Moulton of
River Rouge, Leighton Moulton of Dayton and Mark Moulton of Detroit, and
many other relatives. The family believes that a passage from II Timothy
is appropriate: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness." The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church
of Romulus. Arrangements were handled by Stinson Funeral Home. (Michigan

SLONE - Mack D. Slone
- Services for Mack Duffy Slone were held January 24 at Greater Mt. Olive
Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Johnnie E. Jordan Sr. officiated. Mr. Slone was
born on July 15, 1915 in Union Town, Alabama. He was the oldest
of 11 children. After moving to Detroit Mr. Slone joined Greater Mt. Olive
Baptist Church and eventually joined the ministry. He worked for Ford
Motor Co. for 10 years and later retired from Bennett Wholesale Co. He
is survived by his wife, Corine; daughter, Ceola Burns; stepdaughters,
Fay Roby, Marietta Wright and June Brown; stepson, Edward Jones; two stepsons-in-law,
Walter Roby and Richard Wright; grandson, Jeremiah Slone; stepgrandsons,
Ahmad, Robert and Marvin; stepgranddaughters, Devera, Danea, Danielle,
Dakiva, Jacqui and Tashekial; ten great-step-grandchildren; brothers,
McKinley Slone of Fairfield, Alabama and Joseph Slone of Los Angeles;
and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements were handled by
Swanson funeral Homes Inc. Interment was at Metropolitan Memorial Garden.
