Inventory and division of the slaves of Benjamin Clarke of Fleming County, Kentucky,


Dear Christine:

Attached are are three documents I have found
concerning my ancestor Benjamin Clarke. He came from Fluvanna Co, VA in
approx 1798 with four slaves (I don’t know which four) and settled in
what was then Mason County, KY. I presume he purchased the rest of the
slaves in KY. He died in 1813 in what had by then become Fleming Co, KY.
The Will Probate of which I am sending three pages was drawn in Fleming
Co because that is where his homestead was located but he owned several
thousand acres in both Fleming and Mason Co’s. I have very little information
beyond this point but I would be glad to attempt to answer any further
questions. I hope this information helps you or someone else trace their
ancestry.

Pursuant to an Order of Fleming County Court
at their Dec. term 1816. We the undersigned being first sworn before a
Justice of the peace for’ said county have viewed and appraised in current
money, all the personal property and slaves of the estate of Benjamin
Clark [sic] Dec’d. that has been produced to us. An Inventory of which

In Obedience to an Order of the Flemimg Countv
Court made at their February Term 1817, directing us to divide
the real Estate as well as the slaves of Benjamin Clarke Dec’d. among
the representatives of the said Benjamin Clarke Dec’d, after first being
sworn before Henry Bruce a Justice of the Peace in and for said County
of Fleming, we proceeded to make the following division of the slaves.
