Roll 1 - 1820 - 1843 Habeas Corpus for Will Madison To the Honable James Mosell, Dr. Sir there is a black man committed
to the jail of Washington as a runaway by the name of Madison, this man
was raised in this neighborhood and the barrar Mr. Saml. Snowden will
prove him to be free, is it law for him to be returned for jail fees,
you will please to direct Mr. Snowden how he is to act. I remain Sept. 17, 1821 In this case I have no power to release the
prisoner but by order of one of the judges of US Court, or by order of
two Magistrates upon writ of Habeas Corpus. Mr. Brent will please gain a habeas corpus
& bring up Will Madison free Negro before me at the court room tomorrow
