I am a descendent of a family of Jollys who originated from these two state. In the 1880 census it has my great great grandfather (Alfred Jolly-DOB abt 1834-NC) listed as a farmer in Bluff Port, Sumter, AL and his family (Betty Stewart Jolly, Elizabeth-wife, Mary Ferrell-wife)Sam, Johnson, Foster, U.S. Grant, Anna, Sarah, Robert, Charles, Salina, Cora, Rachel May,James Kinnard, Laura May, Rilla A-Mulatto & Martha Williamson) as farm hands or were children at that time. Mary was listed as a housekeeper. Alfred Jolly was listed as being born in NC. However most of his children were born in Livingston, AL. Rachel May was listed as a farmer, also. All of them lived in the same area or plantation in Bluff Port - Precinct 10-Livingston, AL. If you have any information on any of these people or know of a plantation in NC or AL in which my family could have come from please contact me. If you think you may be a descendant of anyone listed above please contact me immediately.

I have some Bramletts in my family on my mom's side from Mississippi. I ran into that wall as well. My mom's paternal grandmother was Willie Bell Bramlett, she was born in 1888 and married William Toms. They then moved to Arkansas. But I can't find any other information on Willie Bell's parents, as they were probably slaves. I am 1 day new to this site so I have some discovery to do on how to navigate. But I hope this might help some. If you have any info to share hit me back.

Peace & Blessings,

You did not indicate when Anderson L Chavis lived in NC. There was an Anderson Chavis living in Oxford Township in 1860 in Gransville County NC. He is listed as a mulatto indicating he was a free person of color.

He had a wife Harriet, listed as a black woman, in the household with him.

Close by there was another black family of Chavis also.

Don't know if this is helpful or not.

Take care.

History has always fascinated me, but I have a secretive family.

Since I'm in Utah I decided to take advantage of the Mormon's resources. Within a few hours I was able to trace my Great-Great Grandmother and Great-Great Grandfather on my mother's side. They were born in VA in 1863 and 1864 respectively. I now have to find slave records to see if I can trace back farther.

It's easier to find the males since my great-grandfathers had to sign draft registration cards for WWI. These cards listed the counties and states they were born in.

Are you just beginning the genealogy process?

If so, take a look at the beginners online guide on AfriGeneas.com

Also post your query of the forum over there as well.

What kind of documents do you have already? You should be able to trace the history of this family fairly easily as you already have some names. You can begin with the 1930 census. Although you said your relative was born in 1936, his parents would have been living in 1930 so you should be able to find some info on them in the census records.

Good luck to you.

Martha Kimballs mother was also Martha Kimball who lived in Chattahochee co Ga with her brother Albert Kimball. I don't know much more about them but they were people of color. I have done a DNA 25 marker test and have only two matches on the Mt or female line so far. I wont be able to trace my Kimball line because I know no living Kimball relatives. My Mitachondria DNA is going to be through the Redd line of my Mothers.
