Washington County to wit:
On this 15th day of May 1862 personally
appeared in open court in the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia,
George W. Duvall, of (illegible), a citizen of Prince George County
and State of Maryland and residing therein and made oath according to
law that he is the lawful possessor of the Negro slaves hereinafter named,
who were residing in said Prince George County at the time and times hereinafter
stated, to wit: Negro man John Johnson, about twenty eight years
of age, a slave for life the property of this affiant; Eli Harrison,
ages about twenty three also a slave for life to this affiant; Jack
Hall about twenty two years of age, a slave for life, and held
by this affiant under a mortgage or deed of trust as a servant, his wages
to come to this affiant and the said slave to be in the service of this
affiant till the mortgage bill is paid and said mortgage deed is still
unpaid; Jim Hall aged about 18 years to serve for a term of years
which has not yet expired, and then to be free on certain conditions,
in the meanwhile to be the property of this affiant; That the said slaves
Eli and Jack without the knowledge or consent and against the will of
this affiant absconded some time in the month of February last past, and
are now fugitives from labor and service lawfully due by them to said
affiant in said Prince George County; and the said slave Jim about the
first of January and the said John about the 9th of March last,
in like manner without the knowledge or consent and against the will of
said affiant, absconded and ran away from said Prince George County, and
are now fugitives from service and labor lawfully due to said affiant
in said Prince Goerge County and has reason to believe and does believe
that all of the said slaves are now in the District of Columbia; he prays
for process and that said slaves may be taken and delivered up to him
by order of this court receiving & the statute in such cases made
and provided.
