vs.
Rebecca Howard & James Howard
Filed 22 April 1863
District of Columbia, to wit:
Personally came before me a Justice of the
Supreme Court of the District of Columbia this 22nd day of
April 1863 James P. Martin who being duly sworn says that he is a citizen
of Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Maryland, that he is the lawful owner
and possessor of Rebecca Howard and her son James Howard, slaves for life
owing service and labor under the laws of said state, as such slaves for
their lives respectively within the said State, that said Negroes absconded
and are fugitives from the service and labor so due and owing, that is
to say the said Rebecca Howard and her son James Howard since the 1st
day of December 1862 when they severally absconded from the service and
possession of this affiant and are now within this District, and the said
affiant doth further say that he hath not borne arms against the United
States in the present rebellion, nor in any way given aid or comfort thereto.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.

Issue warrant for the arrest of the above
named alleged fugitives from service returnable forthwith before me at
chambers.
