I am a medical librarian by profession and have been interested in my family genealogy since about 1997, but did not begin actively working on it until February 2006. On this blog, you’ll find that I cover my own family tree, and that of my husband’s.

I started this web log after watching Roots: The Next Generations. I wanted to chronicle my search for my own roots, a journey that had started about 8 years ago.

I am descended from Solomon Koonce who was born around 1822 in North Carolina. He was a slave on a farm in Haywood and Crockett County, Tennessee. I am also descended from Napoleon Cotten. He was born in Mississippi around 1857 and lived in Amite and Pike, County. His mother was Winnie Dear. Napoleon married Mary Saunders of Mississippi. My grandmother Lula Alexander is a descendant of John and Catherine Alexander of Lincoln and Pike County, Mississippi

The first known existing photograph of me was taken at 6 weeks. I know that because my mother wrote “Paula, 6 weeks old, Isn’t she cute” on the back. However, the reality is that most of my family pictures are not identified because no ever took a few minutes to pencil in the names on the back. In 1994, my mother, Carmen Browne, was admitted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton seriously ill. As she slowly recovered, I realised had she died so, also, would the chance for me to find out about our past, her family in Jamaica and, of great importance to me, who my father was, information she had refused to share with me. So, I decided to find out for myself.

Transcriptions of Freedmen's Bureau Records

Lowcountry Africana will be entirely dedicated to records that document the family and cultural heritage of African Americans in the historic rice-growing areas of South Carolina, Georgia and extreme northeastern Florida, an area that scholars and preservationists have identified as a distinct culture area, home to the rich Gullah/Geechee culture.

This site is dedicated to assisting all of those in pursuit of African American ancestry by being a central depository for African American records of historical proportion.

Researchers typically use the records of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (commonly referred to as the "Freedmen's Bureau") to study either individuals or African-American communities during Reconstruction. Some records predate the establishment of the Freedmen's Bureau on March 3, 1865. In fact, many of the relief programs carried out by the Bureau have their roots in the "pre-Bureau." Pre-Bureau is a modern term used to refer to the military's efforts to address the needs of the wartime African American refugee community.

Records that pertain to American Slavery and the International Slave Trade

The records created by post-Civil War Federal agencies are perhaps some of the most important records available for the study of black family life and genealogy. Reconstruction-era Federal records document the black family's struggle for freedom and equality and provide insight into the Federal Government's policy toward the nearly 4 million African Americans freed at the close of the American Civil War.

These records are an extremely rich source of documentation for the African American family historian seeking to "bridge the gap" for the transitional period from slavery to freedom, and may provide considerable personal data about the African American family and community.

Sankofa-gen Wiki is a growing collection of freely accessible genealogical and historical data pertaining to U.S.A. antebellum plantations, farms, factories, manors, etc. that used African slave labor. This site is a wiki which means that you, the slave genealogy researcher, can add and update information instantly.

This database includes approximately 3,400 names found in governmental records involving the servitude and emancipation of Africans and, occasionally, Indians in the French and English eras of colonial Illinois (1722–1790) and African-Americans in the American period of Illinois (1790–1863).

In 1984, a professor at Rutgers University stumbled upon a trove of historic data in a courthouse in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Over the next 15 years, Dr. Gwendolyn Midlo Hall, a noted New Orleans writer and historian, painstakingly uncovered the background of 100,000 slaves who were brought to Louisiana in the 18th and 19th centuries making fortunes for their owners.

What started out as a simple pedigree chart a couple of years ago has grown to link many African American families (Adams, Adger, Baker, Bradford, Brown, Boyd, Cade, Caldwell, Conway, Elder, Ford, Gates, Gatterson, Glover, Griffin, Hale, Hamiter, Head, Hodge, Holden, Hutchinson, Jefferson, Johnson, Montgomery, Odom, Paysinger, Perry, Pierce, Player, Prothro, Smith, Stawell, Taylor, Thomas, Washington, and many more) to river plantations situated along the Red River in rural, northwest Louisiana.

Governor Davis signed SB2199 into law in September 2000. This new law required the Insurance Commissioner to request and obtain from California licensed insurers (life, property and casualty) records of slaveholder insurance policies issued during the slavery era. The bill required insurers to research and report policies that provided coverage to slaveholders for damage to or death of their slaves. The Dept. of Insurance sent notices to 1357 insurers and reports approximately 92% response rate. The report, Slavery Era Insurance Registry is available online.

This website contains information about people who lived in slavery on Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantations. It provides access to a database of information on over six hundred individuals--details of life span, family structure, occupation, and transactions like purchases and sales.

In 1791 Robert Carter III began the emancipation process for 500 slaves, the largest number of slaves emancipated by an individual slave owner in the history of the United States! Carter’s emancipation included some of my ancestors.

The Hanover County, Virginia, marriage register of freedmen, officially titled, “Marriage Register of Freedman living in Hanover Co Va, Who were Married by the Act passed by the Legislature of Virginia, February 27th 1866” is a list of 550 African American couples whose marriages were validated by action of the Virginia legislature.

The following is a compilation of data from Arledge family records, census records, wills, Social Security and other death records, draft registration records, etc. that might provide insights for any African Americans researching their family histories if their ancestors were possible slaves of Arledge families.

This database is being created by staff members, as time permits, from the entries in the 131 volumes of the 1867 Voter Registration Records maintained by the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH). The volumes are significant genealogical records as this is one of the first statewide government documents that record African-American males living in Alabama.

The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database is the culmination of several decades of independent and collaborative research by scholars drawing upon data in libraries and archives around the Atlantic world. The Voyages website itself is the product of two years of development by a multi-disciplinary team of historians, librarians, curriculum specialists, cartographers, computer programmers, and web designers, in consultation with scholars of the slave trade from universities in Europe, Africa, South America, and North America.

Dr. Lynn Rainville began this project in 2001. It is supported by numerous institutions, grants, and individuals. The project exists to collect remembrances of historic black funerals, cemetery locations, and biographical information about local families. Includes photos of grave markers and a searchable list of the deceased.

There are thousands of pages of documents relating to Creek Freedmen and their history within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. All information contained on this page relates to an African American family that resided and still resides in Baltimore, Maryland. The records contained in this family tree indicate that the family has been in Baltimore, Maryland since at least 1767 - the birth of Abner Coker.

My family tree sprouts from four different branches, Ghyll, Hinson, Sobers and Williams. For the record, at least three of the family names, Ghyll, Hinson and Sobers, are of British origin. We picked up Ghyll from Wales and Sobers from the British West Indian Island of Barbados. To-date, we've not traced Hinson or Williams beyond America.

This site is a history and a search for all the many branches of this side of my mothe'rs family when during the 1800's the Brooks left Upthur County W.V., and moved to Athens County and Perry County, OH, and then my mother left Athens Co. for Canton, OH where my siblings and I grew up. Now, the two generations of my family under me, are all over the map.

THE VENEY'S. An African-American Family With Roots in Colonial Virginia. We are descendants of Humphrey Veney (b. 1782) and Milly Rich (b.1787). Our historical family home is Richmond County. Other family names include: RICH and THOMPSON.

From the bits and pieces of information available, we have been able to ascertain that there were two brothers, COLEMAN HARDAWAY and STRETFORD HARDAWAY, both ex-slaves. COLEMAN was married to ELLEN "BELLA" and they were the parents of about 13 children. STRETFORD was married to JANE and they were the parents of about 8 children.

Like most African Americans, my family roots in the United States began in slavery. My great-great-great-grandfather, William Thompson, was born in King George County, Virginia, in or around 1800. William spent most of his life as a slave on the Spy Hill Plantation which was owned by Thomas B. B. Baber. While serving on this plantation, William met and married Mildred McGruder. They had ten children, one of which was my great-great grandfather, Joshua Thompson, who was born in or around 1831.

White Slaves and Indians in the Family is the story of my journey to uncover the roots of my African American family tree. Much to my surprise, as I started shaking the branches of this family tree, lo and behold, all sorts of different people started falling out, some with racially ambiguous bloodlines and obscure origins. The enslaved African Americans were there, indeed, in great numbers, but they were not alone for a number of free families of color accompanied them, families who never knew slavery and whose family members fought in the Revolutionary War.

This is an uniquely American story. A story that culminates 10 years of research and reflection. The 200 year relationship between our extended Jewish and Christian family of color formed a basis for America’s bold and 'lively experiment,' different cultures joining with a shared dream of religious and ethnic tolerance, leading them to success and equality.

The Short/Austin Family Tree contains the names of 1,346 family members, with more to be added as they are received. The earliest recorded event is the birth of my great-great grandmother Silla Short 1813 in the slave state of Virginia.

Author states "In the rare instances when the ownership of slaves by free Negroes is acknowledged in the history books, justification centers on the claim that black slave masters were simply individuals who purchased the freedom of a spouse or child from a white slaveholder and had been unable to legally manumit them. Although this did indeed happen at times, it is a misrepresentation of the majority of instances, one which is debunked by records of the period on blacks who owned slaves."

From the colonial days of New Orleans to the present time, a unique group of people has contributed to the most European city in America. They were the "Gens de Couleur Libres", the Free People of Color. Today, commonly known as "Creoles" or "Creoles of Color", their descendants live in all parts of the country.

The name "Dunkerhook" refers to a small section of suburban Paramus, New Jersey reputed to be the former site of a "slave community." According to local histories and an historic marker at the site, Dunkerhook was once home to a population of African Americans, many or all of whom were slaves, as well as a "slave school" and "slave church." However, primary historic documentation establishes that Dunkerhook was populated not by slaves, but rather primarily by free African Americans.

During the Civil War, Union-occupied Roanoke Island, which lies between the North Carolina mainland and the barrier islands known as the Outer Banks, became home to thousands of former slaves. This site presents an introduction to the colony and the colonial experiment that was conducted there. It also features some primary sources, maps, and projects for students.

The Friends of Freedmen's Cemetery was founded in 1997 for the purposes of preserving, commemorating and researching a little known, Civil War-era, African American burying ground in Old Town Alexandria.

In December of 2002 the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum opened its newest exhibition The Last Slave Ships. The exhibit tells the story of three slave ships brought to Key West in 1860, and the Africans liberated from them. Few people – if any – could prove him wrong or challenge his command of the facts. That’s because Webb, a respected historian, genealogist, entrepreneur and former Tri-State Defender associate editor, buttressed his arguments with more than 10,000 historical facts that he’d gleaned from a number of sources.
