Slave cemetery registry for 16 counties in East Tennessee in the works

The nonprofit historic preservation group Knox Heritage and the affiliated East Tennessee Preservation Alliance are partnering with a number of local black history groups – including the Beck Center and the African-American Heritage Alliance – to establish a regional slave cemetery registry.

“We plan to locate the sites, confirm their findings, draft a brief history and create a database to include pictures and all materials we uncover. Jonesville Cemetery Rediscovered

Volunteers cleaned up Jonesville Cemetery inside Dobbins Air Reserve Base on Saturday.

Volunteers recently cleaned up the long neglected Jonesville Cemetery, which was buried on an acre of land on the Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, GA. Most of the people buried there were freed slaves. Read the story here:  Freed Slave Cemetery Rediscovered in Cobb

Clemson University Slave Cemetery Project

The Clemson Anthropology Club has started a project to sketch-map the historic slave cemetery at Soapstone Baptist Church. Wiinthrop University Slave Cemetery Project
