Douglas, Lewis M.
Judge of Probate Court

Daniel (X) Vin makes affidavit in regard to attack of his house by certain disguised men July 10, 1869.

The State of Alabama
Madison County

Personally appeared before me Lewis M. Douglas, Judge of Probate Court, Daniel Vin, who after being duly sworn says that on Saturday evening July 10, 1869 he was informed by one John Glass, another colored man, that J. M. Mayhew was gathering a crowd of men together to attack his house and him (Daniel Vin) for the purpose of having a frolic with him the said Vin, and steal or take his arms away from him and then sell them for Whiskey – And in pursuance of the foregoing information the said Vin went up the mountain and secreted himself about two hundred yards from his house, but so that he could hear them at his house, and he the said Vin says that he has good reason to believe that J. M. Mayhew, Robert Asbern and John Sumner were part of the crowd of men, and that they were all in disguise that attacked his house, and the said Vin further swears that he has not been back to his house at night since he was informed that he would be attacked by the men whose names are mentioned above who were engaged with others in the attack, and that the said Vin is laboring under great bodily fear caused by the demonstrations made against him on last Saturday evening or night. All of which is most respectfully submitted.
